The Apocalyptic Visions of TONIGHT IS GLORY
Updated: 03/24/09
by Kenneth Morton
Tonight Is Glory is a metallic hardcore band from the El Paso, TX area who always seem to be on the road gaining new fans with each and every show. Their debut CD The Vision And Reality has just been released on Standby Records, and they are undoubtedly out on tour in support of the disc as you read this. One of the most hard working bands on the scene today, we caught up with the TIG guys late one night after a lively performance at the Knitting Factory (which by the way featured a brief appearance from Telle of The Word Alive)…
Introduce yourself, tell me what you do in Tonight Is Glory, and tell me what’s the most embarrassing song you have on your IPOD?
Chris: My name is Chris, and the most embarrassing is probably like the Backstreet Boys or something like that.
Roman: I’m Roman and I play vocals. Probably the most embarrassing song I have on there is probably Miley Cyrus.
Bert: I’m Bert and I play drums and the most embarrassing song is probably the N’Sync.
Gabe: I’m Gabe, I play guitar. Well, to me it’s not embarrassing but I guess it’s Lovefool from The Cardigans. I like that song – it’s the softest song I have on my Ipod.
Nathan: I’m Nathan – I play bass. I know no one else in my band likes this song but I just love this song. The song is I Am A Vampire.
How many times have you done one of these national tours?
Roman: We’ve probably gone on six national tours and they’ve all been crazy. I think it’s much more easier now these days.
You guys are signed to Standby now, but you’ve were going on tour even before you had any label support. What made you guys decide to start touring as an unsigned band?
Chris: Before, we used to book everything – and even now we still book our own tours. Now we have the label support. I guess we wanted to get out there and do it, even though we didn’t have the label support. You’ve got to start somewhere. Now since we have the label, we have a lot of support – we have a CD coming out – and more people are starting to notice us because we’re on the label page. We’re a signed band and it’s gotten like way easier from the early shows when we’d show up and we’d be the band that nobody knew at all. And now a couple people know us now – so it’s really changed a lot.
What advice would you give about a band about to go on the road for the first time who are unsigned like you once were?
Nathan: Pretty much don’t give up. It’s going to be the hardest thing to do at first. No one is going to know you. People are going to look at you weird and think “I don’t know this band – they’re kinda catchy but I don’t know..” But don’t give up. If you give up on what you enjoy – what you have fun doing – then you might as well just completely stop. Keep pushing yourself and you’ll actually start growing a fan base and more people will know who you are. That’s when you actually become bigger and things will become easier.
How did you guys wind up being signed to Standby Records?
Nathan: Really how it started was I had a friend who was starting up a small label called Nightmare Records. He was running that for a while. Then once we started recording our CD, he felt it was better if we went to Standby Records. He knew the guys there and he talked to them – and they really wanted us.
What’s going to be the name of the new CD?
Chris: The name of the new CD is The Vision and Reality and it comes out January 20th. It’s going to be released nationwide – Hot Topic, FYE, anywhere you could get it.
Is there any story or concept behind that title?
Roman: The main concept about the CD is my own vision of the end of the world. Every song is pretty much a side story to the end of the world.
What made you decide to take on such a weighty topic?
Roman: Actually it’s kind of weird – because of National Geographic. I watch National Geographic a lot, and I really got into one of these episodes about the end of the world – and it just hit me. There’s there’s all these pieces of art and I had all these visions in my head – and I just had to write and write and write. And that’s where all my stories came from – and that’s how The Vision and Reality came to be – from National Geographic and from my own mind. The very last song is called The End Of The World – and that one is the story about me and my girlfriend watching the end of the world together. Pretty much how you would watch a scenic area with the end coming towards you and the last few minutes of life. I really got deep into this CD – every word has a meaning – and I think that everyone should check out and buy this thing.
Who are some of your hometown El Paso bands you would recommend?
Roman: I would recommend The Royalty – they are such an amazing band. And definitely check out Triumph Over Shipwreck. They are both really good bands! I recommend those two bands from El Paso definitely!
Do you have any messages for people who might be hearing your music for the first time?
Gabe: Just go and check us out. It doesn’t matter if we’re playing for five kids or 5,000 kids – we’re going to put in the same energy all of the time. So definitely check us out, and we hope you enjoy our music.
Roman: We will always go crazy for you guys – the fans – always!
