Origin is the seventh effort from the progressive metal band Borknagar, and in the grand traditional of all their compelling releases, many surprises may be found within its wondrous musical journey. The entire album is an acoustic-based celebration – nine tracks of visionary artistry that are stunning in their straightforward complexity. Founding member Øystein G. Brun deliveries intricate soundscapes on acoustic, classic, and highstring guitars. Vocalist Vintersorg has returned, adding his stylish vocals and complex lyrical ideals to the proceedings. Other notable contribtions include Lars A. Nedland (Solefald, Age Of Silence) on various keyboards, Asgeir Mickelson (Spiral Architect, Testament) on drums, and Tyr (Emperor, Satyricon) on bass.

As a collective, Borknagar has issued an imaginative work of serene magnificence that will dazzle the senses with just as much of an impact as their profound all-electric masterworks. Stand out tracks include Earth Imagery, Grains, and Human Nature. Oceans Rise from The Archaic Course is given the acoustic treatment, standing out as yet another brilliant highlight. An exciting new phase in their unpredictable yet always challenging musicial output, Borknagar remain one of the most innovative bands on the world metal scene today. Origin is a true masterwork that may be appreciated by all serious music aficionados. (Kenneth Morton)
